London Mayor defends
Wonga.com free travel sponsorship
London Mayor, Boris Johnson, has defended his decision to allow Wonga.com, an online
lender with a typical APR of 2689%, to sponsor free travel in the
capital on New Year’s Eve.
In
a letter to the WFCCU, Mr Johnson explained that: “We make no moral
judgments about legitimate businesses that purchase advertisement space
or sponsorship”, which WFCCU Chief Executive, Claire Walters has
described as an ‘indefensible breach of social responsibility’:
“Whether he accepts it or not, Boris Johnson has publicly aligned our
country’s capital with a company that exploits the poor.
“You cannot accept money from Wonga.com,, in return for
massively raising their profile, while simultaneously urging people to
be cautious about using this type of service. This is a triumph of greed
over responsibility.
“Sponsorship is a partnership between organisations with shared
interests for mutual benefit. We would hope that in future, Mr Johnson
considers what mutual benefit really means to the people of London.”
